Village/Town advice

So, I was considering at attempting to try my hands at making a new village, that might one day, depending on my dedication, turn into a town. This, of course, may be a plan that's best suited for the far future (if I can hold myself to it), as I have no previous experience with village building/founding.

Though at the moment, it doesn't seem I'm going to be doing such a daunting project immediately, I was wondering about what sort of decisions former or current town founders made when building their towns. What sort of things they considered before placing the first blocks that would act as the foundation of their creation. Basically, advice that such people could give, and/or experiences they had themselves.

Things such as: How much planning was involved? Was said planning done beforehand, or were things figured out as the project went on? How was the general structure of the town overall decided on? Was there any hiccups in the midst of the town being built? Was the idea of the town itself a concept driven by a distinct head to avoid confusion and make sure that everything was orderly, or was it the consensus of a mass amount of people, who each pitched in their own ideas, contributing uniqueness, and creativity to the establishment?

This is probably a lot to ask, and I'm probably dealing this with more complexity that what is usually required. But, just in case, I thought I'd ask first to see what I could, or should do/look out for when doing these sort of things. Nonetheless, I thank you for your time.

I made a mistake in making the region a poly region. Make a cuboid region.

Guy, I know you have been playing CV for many years now and when I first did DV I just did it as I went. But like Fire said, stick to a cuboid.
Find your 2 other founders and member to help you build... but I have one thing to say that is very important and it has occurred many times to me in the past... make sure this village/town is something you can do alone, because sometimes people will desert you.
To make a Village is not so hard. Start out by selecting your area well. Look for what biome/s you want and that there is not too much terrain that needs removal, never flatten the land completely. They look better with some elevation. For building the village it's just the basics you need. A home for each person who is a founder and member. A hut for a village hall, village centre, roads and signs. Along with anything else needed to get it accepted.
Once you have a size and theme worked out build your wall to fit.
Set your village to the side of where you want the central town plan to be, because this will be your base of operations, where your storage and that will be. Then for building the town you will not be in the way.
Some say go to your CW plot and do your big builds in creative first, which is a great idea. I did this for many of mine.
Find the middle area of your village and mark things out. Use odd blocks in different colours for different things. Green for roads, yellow for Town Hall etc.
For me, DVII was some-what planned before-hand. I knew what the town hall would look like and how the roads where set.
Then for making it a town... I found that straight main roads worked better and that they all came out from the central hub/town centre/town hall. Even though winding roads are nice and all, they are best kept to the minor roads. I would say make the roads 9, 7, and 5 wide, this includes the sides where there will be street lighting etc. Then for plots have a 3 wide birth before the home/build plots and 5 between the plots, this give you room to do gardens. Don't squash it all together.
I have learnt much on how to build a village/town over the years. But if you want the info on a city plan, talk to BNM she knows that side better than me, seeing she did EON and WoodHurst.
