Flotsam Aquarium of Conservation & Trade

Post by Joshiek »

Hello all!

I have finally completed my build, the Flotsam Aquarium of Conservation & Trade, or F.A.C.T. for short :D

Location:
https://www.cubeville.org/map/#cv7survi ... 0:0:0:flat

Images:
► Show Spoiler
I have seen aquariums done in CV, but (at least to my knowledge) not to this scale. My aquarium features Sea Turtles, Dolphins (which are a pain), Axolotls, Glowing Squids, and Freshwater and Tropical Fish.

What is unique about this aquarium is that there is real-world educational information about real marine life from actual marine biologists and specialists! There are various lecterns around the aquarium that give you real-world insight and information on not just the animals in the game, but other aquatic life like Whale Sharks, Sea Lions, and Manta Rays! My goal in making this aquarium was to help educate anyone that might want to see it. CV has a lot of young players, and it's always so inspiring to see them learn new things. I hope this build is not only interesting to see but also that people come and learn something they might not have known, and from actual trusted sources.

Additionally, there is a conservation center on the side of the building that offers aquarium packages! Purchasing them from me will allow you to name fish, turtles, axolotls, etc., and add them to the aquarium habitats. You can even help hatch, raise, and release new turtles in the ocean that the aquarium is floating on top of! :)

But wait there's more! The education center will also feature a weekly rotation of animal information with a new marine animal being featured each week. Next week will feature the renowned and frightful Hammerhead Shark! The Idea with this is to keep people returning to the aquarium if they are interested in learning about new marine life.

A little TL;DR as well: I used to work at one of the largest aquariums in the world, and it was an amazing experience. I hope to bring some of that experience to CV with this aquarium ^_^

The place looks amazing! Voting has begun and will close on or near Wednesday 16th August, so you can expect results by the 17th.

Best of luck!

With an overall score of 449/490 = 91.6% I’m happy to announce the Flotsam Aquarium of Conservation and Trade (F.A.C.T) as CV 7’s first quality landmark!

As a quality landmark you are entitled to the following:
  • A region covering the entire landmark
  • A free portal from landmarks hub to your landmark, including particles
  • The ability to purchase biome adjustments for 500c each
  • Tier 1 region flags may be purchased for 150c each
  • Tier 2 region flags may be purchased for 250c each
Please refer to the Landmark Requirements forum post for a list of all tier 1 and tier 2 region flags.

A breakdown including comments and individual scores from each anonymous voter is available upon request.

Please design a portal in its final location so an A+ can set it up from hub (modreq when you've got it finished).

Congratulations F.A.C.T!

• Uniqueness • 137.5/140 = 98.2%

Aquariums are not a new concept for CV - in fact, there is a server aquarium build accessible at CVC Downtown. That being said, this aquarium does a lot to stand out from other aquariums on CV - like including a bunch of real facts about various sea creatures, for example. It feels like it could be a real aquarium, which is quite nice to see. 7.5/10

This build is very well executed! The aquarium is awesome, we have yet (to my knowledge) to have a educational space for a landmark :D I absolutely love the F.A.C.T packages as well in the conservation. 10/10

I've never seen something like this before :o with the addition of fishes and seawater updates to CV7 I think this is a great idea honestly 10/10

I haven't seen many aquariums on CV, and the detail in this is awesome. I loved reading the information about the different animals. This build is very well built and decorated. A couple of the books did not have sources and I would double check that and add those, but otherwise very well done! 10/10

There may have been aquarium builds on the server before, but I'm not certain, which tells me that they were absolutely nowhere near this build's level of quality and loving detail. The build itself is very polished, open and elegant, inviting visitors to walk in and look around with its very structure. I love the clean line of the staircase, and how it feels like it's bringing you closer to the animals in their tanks as you ascend it. And that’s all before realizing that the build actually incorporates the educational component of a real-life aquarium visit, and will be constantly updating no less! It’s also a neat touch that it sustains itself through membership packages, again like a real aquarium would – I imagine many nubs will love the idea of having the opportunity to name one of the animals, very cute! 10/10

I love aquariums and this one did not disappoint! I had a great time looking around at all the animals and learning about them. I love the fun facts and all the information about the mobs! The Conservation Center and packages are also great additions, especially being able to name and take home different animals. The build itself is well made and follows the ocean theme. Overall, it’s brilliant! 10/10

You absolutely got me here, I am a sucker for aquariums, museums, planetariums, etc. The idea of this is perfect for me! The build itself is very well done, the architecture is interesting and visually appealing, and your color scheme is great. 10/10

This is really cool! While I can recall a few small aquariums scattered across various maps, none have been made to this scale, or with the primary intent being to educate. It really does feel like a real aquarium, which is pretty awesome. The build is also really pretty which I appreciate, I love the little octopus off to the side :P 10/10

I think this build is awesome! It's such a cool idea to have an actually educational aquarium, and I don't think I can remember anything similar in the past. I'm a big fan of aquariums in general, so you really got me with this one xD Great job! 10/10

This is so sick, with the inclusion of the membership and the ability for players to name their own animals, this makes this landmark all the more unique. All the resources and such to real world facts about sealife was what really caught my eye. Plus, the build is super cute! Also, loving all the little decorations like the turtle food and the octopus statue. Very awesome idea! 10/10

This is AMAZING! I got there and spent a while reading all about animals. It's an amazing idea for a landmark, definitely unique. I can tell you've spent a lot of time on researching the information. 10/10

Very well done. Build is high-quality, architecture is very nicely done. Love the stepped roof. All the blocks follow the blue/nautical theme, very well done. As for the content: Very nicely done, even citing sources everywhere. Read everything, and learned some new marine facts during the vote. Also excited to see what gets added in the future. 10/10

Certainly a unique landmark idea, at least for this map, and one I found myself enjoying perhaps more than I thought I would. You get used to minecraft mobs just being around and sometimes useful, but it was actually a treat to learn more about them here. 10/10

I don't remember seeing a player-built aquarium on CV before - definitely unique! I love that there is educational material here, I know I've learned quite a bit just walking around! 10/10

• Timelessness • 270/280 = 96.4%
I do believe that players will fondly remember the map's only educational aquarium fondly. I also LOVE the idea of adding new information on a weekly basis - that would keep me coming back consistently! 20/20

The idea of this landmark is great, and the implementation is awesome! The details and extra features here and there kept me exploring for quite a while, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to read the next series of educational posts (updating those every week is quite a commitment, but I know at least a few people already who will be checking in to find out what comes next!). The animal adoption and F.A.C.T membership idea is great, a way to provide an income for the landmark whilst also making the visit memorable for those adopting or naming an animal, giving them more reasons to return again in the future to see how their own animal is doing. 20/20

Similar to the above, the build is amazing. But the information; now that is what gets me to come back. I enjoy browsing random Wikipedia articles for the same reason; otherwise random information that is super fun to read and learn about. I'm also really enjoying that there is not-yet-released content that will be making its way in soon. I'm hoping the trend continues, with the library continuing to expand. 20/20

I love the memberships concept and how you can name animals. This could definitely be something players talk about even after CV7. The time and effort you put into making it amazing is really paying off. I could definitely see myself coming back and reading more about any additions you make. 20/20

Having the weekly update for information is SUCH an amazing idea to keep players coming back, and definitely a place I will come back to in the following maps. Especially with the membership, being able to come back and see your own fish/sealife with customs names that YOU chose? That's too cool. I think the only thing I could recommend/want is making the aquarium a little bigger, maybe with more aquariums for different tropical fish/pufferfish/even frogs if you wanted to. Otherwise, super cool. 19/20

I love this build, it's been so cool to explore it! I think a lot of people will remember this for a long time, as there hasn't been anything done quite like it before. As mentioned by a lot of other voters the weekly facts will likely bring quite a few people returning to read, that's going to be quite the undertaking but I'm looking forward to it :P 20/20

I spent quite a lot of time just scrolling through the books in the education center - I love how much information is here, and I'm excited to pop in every now and then to check out the weekly animal educational posts. The memberships are also a fantastic idea, very fun! 20/20

I loved going around and reading all the things you have about each animal. The books here go on for several pages and it's obvious you have put in the work and cited your sources, which I appreciate. You have books about sea lions, whale sharks, and manta rays which I enjoyed especially since they are not in the game at all, and it really helped set the immersion of a real aquarium for me. The ICUN book detailing conservation statuses is a nice touch and hopefully has an impact for players. The memberships and adoptions are awesome, I really love that similarity to real life aquariums.

Unfortunately, I must point out that there are no fact books posted for the majority of your animals that already *are* on display, namely squid, salmon, cod, pufferfish, and tropical fish. There are just a couple "did you know" signs for them, but those are not enough in my opinion. Hopefully this is something you will be adding to the weekly additions!
One last thing that I felt was missing is a gift shop. It could be something simple that sells fish themed banners or a named pet fish in a bucket for example. You can definitely get creative with it! 16/20

I’m looking forward to coming back here for the weekly education! There are lots of different features that will have people (and myself) wanting to visit again. The memberships and care packages are similar to real life aquariums, and encourage people to come see the aquarium again. 20/20

Every time the rotating fact books on marine life are refreshed, there will be a new reason for nubs to come visit, which is a really awesome way to engage players and keep a landmark relevant throughout the span of the map. There is even potential for FACT to inspire a nub or two to look into further research outside of CV, or possibly even a future career in a field such as marine biology or ecology, which is amazing to think about; for me, just the possibility of that alone merits full points in this category. 20/20

I would definitely want to come back here often to see the new books in place. Being able to name animals and follow them sounds like so much fun! Maybe you could have a chest where they can throw in a named item with an animal they'd like to learn about, so that you can see what interests the players :) 20/20

It seems like it would last a long time! 18/20

With the change up in learning about new animals every week, This will give it a timeless feel to lure you back into visiting week upon week to check out the new animal, plus the packages will also lure people back and forth as well. I would recommend maybe
adding a few more viewing options, adding a underground to the aquarium with some more aquatic life. 20/20

The build is quite a good build, and I do think this aquarium could be fairly memorable even in future maps as it is quite cool to visit. However, I do wonder how many times people will actually visit, as it is fairly easy to view all of it during one visit, which might limit the future impact of the aquarium. 17/20

• Surrounding Area • 41.5/70 = 59.3%
I mean, I suppose an aquarium floating in the ocean does make sense, though it would maybe be nice to have it seem a bit more believable to be floating? The ocean seems lit up around it, so that’s good, and it is located in a nice floating village. Otherwise, there hasn’t been much done with the ocean below. 3/5

I've seen some areas not lit and there is a lot of unlit areas on the ocean floor. Everything otherwise looks great! I can see you have a great little village surrounding the aquarium, everything is color coordinated which I appreciate and also everything appears very neat and organized. (I would also recommend that you at least put regions on the surrounding areas it is a hazard as people start accumulating around your landmark, I wouldn't want your hardwork to end up getting greifed **this did not have a impact on your score**) 3.5/5

Its mostly water, but since its floating it would be a pain to fall in the ocean and die while looking at the cute fishes
The land next to it should probably be lit as well. 3/5

The in progress village looks very nice as well, definitely work on getting that completed so that it is fully protected! It fits the theme very nicely. I did notice that the little side piece on the aquarium and some builds, like the light house, are not fully lit, and mobs did spawn. you'll want to light those up for sure :) 3/5

FACT appears to be part of a larger in-progress build (appears to be a wip village?), and everything about it so far looks quite pretty and nicely tied together. The aquarium roof, the small park on the west side, and the loading dock area on the east side do all have some areas of low light-level that should be double-checked for player safety though. 3/5

The only issue I see is that there are a few spots around the aquarium which aren’t lit up too well and mobs could spawn in. 3/5

The aquarium's surroundings are what looks like a village(?) floating on water with a nice matching aquatic theme. The village appears to be under construction yet, which is fine since it's not included in this vote, but areas of it are unlit and will spawn mobs. The unlit top of Flotilla Home Pod #3-A spawned some zombies which simply walked down the boardwalk to the aquarium to attack me. I jumped in the water to check how easy it was to get back up, and all I found were two ladders at the front of the aquarium and nothing else. I would suggest adding more ladders around, especially by the conservation center and the garden on the other side of the aquarium building. The underwater portion has bubble columns for air and a few decorations, but is still mostly vanilla. It's also somewhat unlit on the ocean floor, and a drowned zombie spawned and tried to attack me while I was down there. 2/5

There's a couple spots on the roof of the aquarium, the surrounding village, and in the water where mobs could spawn, which is not super optimal and should at some point be fixed. I'm a little anxious about the village around your landmark not having a protection, particularly with how much work has clearly already gone into it! I would apply for village status ASAP after completing the requirements. 3/5

Some of the area needs more lighting, and I'm pretty nervous about such a cool village not being protected by official status or even personal regions. I would strongly recommend applying for village status as soon as possible, especially with a potential portal coming to the area. I do love the look of the village and the decorations around the aquarium though! 3.5/5

Like was said before, fixing up the lighting a bit will definitely help the area as mobs can spawn underwater. Points won't be docked for this, but I'd start thinking about where to put a portal that would be easy access for your area here. Looking around, I couldn't find a place with a portal marked out but it's worth looking for a nice place to put one! 3/5

The little builds around are well made, but the water and surrounding area could be lit more to prevent death or injury. Also the plots are a nice idea but sounds very griefable. Personally I would try to make the other area get village to add a protection around but you've already got a fair bit of villagey stuff already so it wouldn't be too difficult. Finally the addition of some sort of marker in the water to see where your area starts / begins would also be nice. 3/5

Very nicely done, fits in with the ocean theme and the general theme of the surrounding village well. It's nice to have it as a focal point. The only items I will knock here is that it feels like it was squeezed into a spot, whereas if the structure was set back 10-ish blocks to the South, it might not feel like it's intruding into the village. Either that, or put it in-in the middle of the village, it would feel less smushed-in on the side then. 3.5/5

A few minor points to note here:
-There is some lighting missing on top of the conservation centre, allowing mob spawning in a few points.
-The village(?) this is part of is also a great concept and some very good looking builds already. I worry that it isn't currently protected by regions, and that could become a little dangerous if you have a landmark portal taking players directly there. Personally I would advise working on a village application as well to cover the whole area with a region.
-Some underwater lighting would reduce drowned spawning, though the raised level of the builds would stop them coming onto land at least. 3/5

The surrounding area is mostly water, which is helpful for an aquarium :3 That said, it would really stink to be reading all the great info and start being shot by a trident :( Might be a good idea to add some pickles to the ocean floor to reduce drowned spawns. Not a huge deal, but definitely worth considering :)

Next, the portion of this area that is actual land should probably be lit as well to prevent players from being attacked by mobs at night.

Finally, I notice that you don't have an outline of where your region should be. It might be helpful to have buoys/walls and gates to show where the area starts and stops. Overall, well done - just a couple of things I noticed :) 2/5

• Additional Comments •
One suggestion I have for a cool addition would be citing the sources you used at the end of the all books in case anybody would like to look it up for themselves. Credible sources are really useful for research papers and a pain to find sometimes.

Otherwise it's an amazing landmark. I can definitely see myself coming here on multiple occasions. I wish you great luck with further additions!

A few quick asides (no bearing on the landmark score):
1. PLEASE apply for village protection on those beautiful surrounding builds as soon as you can, since a portal will bring an explosion of foot traffic, and having the area protected from griefing will help preserve it.
2. I didn’t see a portal area when I teleported in, which confused me for a moment, but isn’t a big deal and doesn’t reflect on my score at all. Might be good to start considering where to add one in the event of a passing landmark vote though – it’ll be your visitor’s first impression of the build! :D
