CV7: Villages, Towns and Cities

🌟 More Player Options

This map we are going to have three levels of player made settlements - Villages, Towns, and Cities. Villages remain much as they were with only minor tweaks. Town requirements have changed significantly, and they will now be an intermediate step between the other two. Cities have similar requirements as Towns did previously, with a few changes and extra perks. Both Towns and Cities will have portal wings in Hub. We wanted to expand these options for a few reasons:

Attainability
The large jump in requirements between Village and Town in the current system means that passing the staff vote can be a daunting experience for some players. Meeting the straightforward checklist for Village is a fairly easy process, but until now the next step up required you to have a fully developed town that met several criteria and was assessed and voted on by the staff team. That is a hurdle that can leave people feeling like it just isn't attainable for them. Having an intermediate step will allow all players to know they can achieve something beyond Village, without removing the challenge and skill expression required to reach the top level.

Getting Around the Map
Town portals have been few and far between on CV6, and it means that large areas of the map require a lot of trekking from the nearest portal to reach. Portals were never supposed to be super rare, and a great village can easily suffer because it takes 20 minutes for players to actually get there. The new system, in which portals are available to both Towns and Cities, supports making portals more widely available in general, and opens up the whole map to easier access with player progress. Having access to a portal sooner will also help players bring their friends together to build toward the final step of City.

Variety
More options here are a good thing. Some people might want a portal to their village to make life easier for residents, but don't necessarily want to put in all the work to pass a full vote against more rigorous criteria. Some areas might be suited to just a small Town, rather than a full City. The new requirements for Town focus on functionality, so nobody needs to feel restricted to any particular build style or layout in order to pass a vote. We are hopeful that this change will make more of the diverse and interesting player communities accessible to all.

New tutorials will make the requirements easy to understand for everyone.

🌟 Villages

Villages are going to remain more or less the same, with some slight amendments to the criteria. The new requirements will be updated on the forum once CV7 draws nearer, but if you've made a village on Cubeville before then you shouldn't have any problem doing so again on CV7. If you've never seen the village requirements before, you can take a look at the current ones here.

Once you believe you have met the village criteria, you will be able to submit your application on the forum, and an Admin or SA will come out and assess your village against the checklist. If you meet all the criteria, then you'll be awarded official village status, which comes with a region protection covering your entire village, and a No-Build-Zone region protecting a further 100 blocks in each direction.

Villages are achievable for all players who want to build a community with friends.

🌟 Towns

Towns are the most impacted category. They are the second level of player made settlements and have higher requirements than villages, representing a more developed area. You will need to bring some more design elements into the builds, provide additional amenities to the residents, and the whole place should feel more structured. Rather than being voted on, Towns are now checklist style, like Villages.

Once you have completed the Town tutorial and put in the work to progress to the next level, you will submit your application on the forum, and an Admin or SA will come out and take a look round, assessing your Village against the Town criteria. The requirements list for Towns is fairly straightforward, obviously requiring more work than a Village, but far more achievable for more players than Town was in the past.

Once you successfully meet the Town criteria a portal will be set up from the Towns wing of Hub, allowing everyone easy access to visit your town and allowing you to grow without having to lead everyone there from the nearest drop point all the time!

A careless pilot looks like he's about to squish the new Cities hub!

🌟 Cities

Cities are the final level of player settlements, representing a fantastic place to build a home, and being quite an achievement for the founders and builders. This final level will not just be following a checklist of items to progress, but rather will be assessed in various areas in a voting process by the staff team, as Towns were previously. To get an idea of what might be required before it is posted, though there are changes, you can look at the current voting categories for Town, (Cities are similar to CV6 Towns, but expanded,) here.

Why bother building a City when you can get a portal much easier with a Town? Well we have expanded the benefits on offer to Cities to incentivise people to still work towards this goal, and to reward those who put in the work to achieve the pinnacle of player made community areas.

Cities Hub
Cities will be in their own section of Hub, separate from Towns. This will be a smaller area, where your portal can stand out from the crowd and attract more attention. Should you achieve Premium City status, you may also get shiny particles in your portal! And who doesn't love shiny particles?!

Internal Portals & More
There will be internal portals available to cities; pairs of portals to get to and from locations within your town from the arrival area. They might go to a popular farm location, or to the centre of your commercial district. You might incorporate these internal portals into your planning and create whole sections of your City underwater, in the sky, underground etc. which would benefit hugely from easy access via portal. There are some other new perks as well, so look out for those when the new criteria are posted!

Sense of Achievement
As well as the additional perks on offer to Cities, there is also the sense of achievement that comes from passing a vote. Will you be one of the first to achieve City status on CV7?

Yes, it is a chain you need to follow but there won't be anything for Town that you won't need for City so it will be a fairly smooth process if you are planning to go through all three.
