Writing Competition: A New Dimension!

Writing Competition: A New Dimension!

What is the writing competition?

As part of the Cubeville Art Slam, we are running a writing competition where players can submit creative writing projects based on a set writing prompt. You can use any writing style you like, so long as the story is based on the prompt set in this post. It could be a short story, a newpaper expose, poetry, theatrical script, etc. The competition opens Sunday 13th September 2020 and entries must be submitted by 11:59pm Saturday 26th September 2020, EST.

How do I enter?

Entry is simple, you just need to start a thread in this forum and put your writing submission in there. You can post it all at once, or you can make your thread and edit it/add to it over the course of the two weeks. Your writing will not be judged until after the submission deadline has passed so you are free to add/remove/change/draft as much as you like until that time. If you are unable to create a forums account yourself, you can ask someone else to submit on your behalf, they just need to clearly mark at the start of the thread who the author is.

What is the writing prompt?

Your writing must be based on the following writing prompt:

"A new, previously hidden, dimension is discovered. It is completely different to the overworld, end or nether."

Rules for entries

Your submission must only be written by you.
You may only make one entry.
Your submission must be based on the writing prompt given, how you proceed from there is up to you.
Your submission must be a minimum of 1000 words, and a maximum of 5000 words.
If you are including any players from Cubeville in your writing, you must have their permission before including them.
Submissions must be written in English, if you need help with translation that is fine, so long as the original writing is your own.
Your submission must be original, all entries will be checked for plagiarism and any found not to be original will be disqualified.

How are entries judged?

There will be an open vote for all players to pick their top three entries, which will run for one week after the closing date. More details of how and where to vote will be made available nearer the time.

What can I win?

The prizes are as follows:

1st Place - Additional Ores Minirank / OR / Obsidian Placement Minirank / OR / 1000 cubes
2nd Place - Additional Logs Minirank / OR / Glass Placement Minirank / OR / 500 cubes
3rd Place - Additional Flint Minirank / OR / Mycelium Placement Minirank / OR / 250 cubes

Note that miniranks stay with you throughout map changes, whilst cubes are reset each map. You may want to take that into consideration when you choose your prize.

amazing story tis.
I have a few hundred questions, but I'll be nice and only ask a few.
do we have to have it be a complete different world or can it base off the overworld kinda?
can we get inspiration from a tv show or other book we've read?
does it have to be a minecraft story or can it include non-minecraft things?
stemming off of that question, do we have to include things from CV?
can the story include characters from other books/tv shows we've read/seen?
can the world base off of the book/tv show worlds?
does it have to be a different world or could it be, for example, how the mooshroom views the overworld?

those are all the questions I can think of right now but knowing me I'll probably have more.

It needs to be a new dimension so separate from the Overworld, Nether or End. It could have similarities to those other dimensions, so long as it is different enough to be its own dimension.

You can get inspiration from anywhere, so long as you are not directly copying anything.

It can include non-Minecraft things and it does not have to be based on CV.

As mentioned before you can get inspiration from anywhere, but you may not directly copy from anywhere. If your main character is a wizard, that's fine. If your main character is a wizard with a lighting scar on his forehead, a pet owl and gets to school via a train from Kings Cross station, then you have probably crossed the line from inspiration to copying ;)

This seems the same as the earlier question, but again inspiration only, no copying storylines/characters/worlds etc directly over.

It needs to be a new dimension, so it can be some kind of mushroom based land but it can't be set in the overworld.
