Mining sandstone in sand farmland

Is it possible to make sandstone farmable in the sand farmland as well? I like to build with sandstone, but the current situation is a dilemma -- either I go wreck a desert to get to the standstone underneath, or I am a good citizen and go to the sand farmland, but then I need to wear out my shovels (and patience!) gathering four times as much sand -- and having all the crafting to combine it afterwards.

I'm guessing adding sandstone to the list of allowed breakable blocks could be a rather trivial change..?

The problem with this suggestion is that the entire base of the sand islands is sandstone. So allowing breaking sandstone means people can very quickly find themselves falling into the void, and leaving large holes to the void for other people to fall into. Not saying that we won't consider this, but it is certainly not just an issue of adding sandstone to the block break list; some redesign work on the island would be required to make sandstone mining possible and safe.
